Richard R Angus

The Passing of A Legend

As many of you who knew Richard R. “Dick” Angus, know he passed away in November of 2013. Dick was a regular at many of our ESP National Conferences until the past few years when he was unable to attend. Recently a very nice article was published about Dick in the DelMarVa Farmer, which a regional publication in the Northeast.

For those of you who didn’t know Dick personally the article really portraits the kind of Extension Educator, and more importantly, the kind of man he was. Dick was very generous with his time, treasure and talents to both the NAE4-HA and ESP organizations and to all of those he served in his Extension career. Long after he retired Dick still contributed to the organizations and the profession that he served so well.

In my early years in ESP at the National level, I looked to Dick Angus as being “Mr. ESP.”  I thought if Dick didn’t start ESP he must have given the founding fathers the idea for the organization. Of course Dick came long after the beginning of ESP but if he had been there at the time, he certainly would have led the way.

I hope you enjoy the article. Here is the link to it - Legacies of our Land

Balloting to Begin

Voting to Begin for Recognition Awards & Officers

The voting will begin soon to select the recipients of the regional awards and to elect the new regional vice-presidents for the Southern Region and the North Central Region.  We have been using the system to vote on the recognition awards for several years but this will be a new adventure to use the system for electing the leadership of ESP.
The National Council at the meeting during Galaxy approved the change in the way we elect officers.  The election will be done with each chapter casting a single ballot.  The chapters will be able to determine how they will decide who to cast their votes for.  Those chapters having more than one delegte will have their vote weighted accordingly.

One of the reasons for the change was to allow every chapter to participate in the election.  In the past the elections of the regional vice presidents was done at JCEP and later they were done at the national conference during the National Council meeting.  Often there were chapters who did not have delegates in attendance at these meetings and were thus excluded from participating in the election.

A second reason for the change was that candidates were required to schedule travel to the national conference, not knowing whether they would need to stay the extra time for the National Board meeting following the conference.  Candidates were asked to come prior to the conference for the Board meeting prior to the conference so that they could become oriented to their responsiblities should they become elected.

The announcement of the results will be made at the end of May or early June.  Announcing the new officers at this time will allow them to sit in on the monthly board conference calls and the orientation will be more thorough and done earlier which will allow the new officer to hit the ground running when they take office.

The National Board is constantly looking for ways to better serve the members of our organization, this is the latest in many new ideas to be implemented.
