Assistant University Extension Educator, Community Development Education (CDE); Position #0286 Assistant Level - salary commensurate with education and experience, and availability of funds. Screening will begin January 30, 2012 and continue until a qualified candidate is identified.
The area of responsibility for this position includes Converse, Natrona, and Niobrara Counties (CNN). The position will be based in the Natrona County Extension Office in Casper, Wyoming. The county population is approximately 71,750. The county seat is Casper which offers a multitude of choices for a wealth of natural and cultural history. Casper is the only place where the Oregon, Mormon, Overland, Pony Express, and Bridger Trails intersect. Cattle and sheep ranching were among the first enterprises, and diverse geological formations fostered the development of an energy industry fueled by oil, gas, coal, and uranium. Casper's central location has made it a focal point for regional- financial, retail, and medical services. Natrona County has one of the best and most progressive school systems in the state and is the home of the states' largest community college. The low crime rates, clean air, and wide open spaces make Casper an excellent place to live.
Nature and Purpose:
This position provides educational programs in the area of community development, focused on increasing the capacity of communities, enterprises, and families to create a sustainable future to live, learn, and work. Educational programs focus on developing communities by increasing skills in: communication; problem solving; decision making; leadership; goal achievement; financial management; and, developing networks.
Responsibilities/Essential Duties:
The individual in this position will serve as a representative of the University of Wyoming (UW) and foster a productive relationship with elected officials and other stakeholders in the CNN area. Primary duties include but are not limited to:
* Gathering and using input to determine needs and issues facing county and area citizens.
* Develop interdisciplinary programs to address needs and issues within CDE initiative.
*Participate on the CDE State Initiative Team and CNN Area Extension Team.
* Provide expertise and leadership for CDE subject matter to 4-H youth in the area.
* Develop linkages and relationships between CES and community organizations or agencies.
* Teach in a variety of settings - subject matter in leadership development programs, community issue assistance, financial management training, governing board training, rural family enterprise education, economic and social impact analyses, and mediation and facilitation. *Provide reports of activities and accomplishments.
*Assist with special projects on a local or statewide level.
Required:
* A master's degree from an accredited college or university in Communication, Business Administration, Economic Development, Political Science, Agribusiness and Applied Economics, Family and Consumer Sciences, Rural Sociology or a related field.
*A valid driver's license and serviceable vehicle are required.
* To accomplish individual and/or group goals, applicants must have demonstrated skills as indicated by experience and references, in working with people as individuals, groups and coworkers.
* Excellence in ability to communicate verbally and in writing as demonstrated by formal training, experience and application material.
*Ability to work with limited supervision.
*A commitment to travel through rural counties.
*Note: this position is located in Casper, Wyoming. Some overnight travel, night and weekend work is required.
Qualifications Preferred:
*Knowledge of Cooperative Extension and the land-grant university system.
*Knowledge of and appreciation for rural and agricultural communities.
* Subject matter expertise in community development and family resource management.
* Training and/or experience in community capacity building and teaching group process/meeting facilitation, conflict mediation, and local government official training.
*Experience in audience needs identification and program results evaluation.
*Computer proficiency.
*Prior Extension experience preferred.
*Demonstrated teamwork.
