Member Services Committee and National ESP Board Approve
New Recognition Programs and Modify Others for 2004
Duane P. Johnson, Member Services Committee Chair
Here are the changes for the Recognition Program in 2004:
- Chapter DSA Recipients will be recognized during the National ESP Professional Development Conference. The Regional nominees and recipients will also be recognized.
- Early Career Service Recognition expanded to include Regional Recognition. This recognition gives regional recognition to an early career professional who has shown noteworthy enthusiasm, performance, and accomplishment during their early Extension careers in program design an delivery. One nominee per chapter. Nominee must be a current or previous year's recipient of the state Early Career Service Recognition and still be less than 10 years of service. One such recognition can be presented, in each of the four regions each year to a current Epsilon Sigma Phi member. The recognition is presented to the recipient during the National ESP Conference Recognition Banquet.
- Chapter and Regional Recognition for Administrative Leadership added.
- Chapter Recognition gives chapter recognition to an Extension Professional who has shown noteworthy administrative enthusiasm, performance, and accomplishment during their Extension careers (10 years or more). Administrative leadership may be at county, regional, state, program, department, or national level. Documentation of the candidate's work in meeting the needs and furthering the efforts of supervised faculty, staff and/or program should be primary in this recognition. One nominee per chapter.

Data supporting measurable impacts of the candidate's work in meeting the needs of clientele will strengthen the nomination. An Extension professional will be come eligible for this recognition after five years of receiving the State DSA recognition.
- Regional Recognition is designed to give regional recognition to an experienced Extension professional with twenty-plus years of experience who has exhibited continued leadership, initiative, and excellence in Extension program planning, delivery, evaluation in program or administration, on a state or regional or national level after receiving the state DSA award. One such award can be presented in each of the four regions each year to a current Epsilon Sigma Phi member. Chapters in each region vote for the candidates from their region.
Diversity Recognition Program at the Chapter and Regional Level.
The Member Services & Public Issues Committees recommended the following for implementation in 2004.
The purpose of the ESP Diversity Recognition is to recognize outstanding efforts and accomplishments in achieving and sustaining diversity in the Extension, programs and/or audiences. Diversity is defined as acknowledging, understanding, valuing and celebrating differences among people relative to race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status or sexual orientation. (List is not all-inclusive and not limited to those that are mentioned.
The Recognition
Each year this recognition may be presented to one team and one individual in each Epsilon Sigma Phi chapter and each region to members whose innovative programming reinforces the organization's commitment to reaching diverse audiences.
The team nomination should include all staff (full-time and part-time academic professional and civil service) that had a primary role in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating the program.
The program must have been implemented in the past three years.
Criteria
- Addressed significant diversity issues in relation to current state and national issues/initiative
- Made innovative efforts to attract and reach diverse and/or targeted audiences
- Demonstrated collaborative efforts
- Utilized creative and unique strategies to market or publicize the program to reach diverse and/or targeted audiences
- Made efforts above and beyond affirmative action program requirements
One such Regional award can be presented in each of the four regions each year to a current Epsilon Sigma Phi member and to a team (at least 50% of the members of the team are to be ESP members). Chapters in each region vote for the candidates from their region.
Clarifications on Nominees for Regional and National Recognition
Duane P. Johnson, Member Services Committee Chair
The Member Services Committee and National ESP Board have clarified areas that seem to cause confusion.
- An ESP Member may not be nominated for Regional Recognition while serving on the National Board.
- Chapters may submit a current or former recipient of a specific Chapter Recognition for Regional Recognition. An example would be a Chapter may choose to submit someone who received the Chapter DSA in 1998 for Regional Consideration rather than the recipient of the chapter recognition for 2003 -04.
- Life members are eligible for all recognition as well as active members.
